South Delta Midwifery Journal

Happy New Year!

Well we had an exciting Christmas, with 2 Christmas Day babies! Congratulations to those families and to the others that had their babies over the holiday season.
We are seeing changes around here in the next few weeks. Jules is starting next week - so everyone will be starting to get to know her as she settles in to life in South Delta. Jules is looking forward to getting to know you all and orientating to her new hospital base in Richmond.
Amy, our new UBC student starts on the 12th. Amy has a wonderful background from both her family and her own experiences. She has just returned from working with pregnant women in Thailand.

We have spaces still available in May, June and July so please phone if you are interested in discussing care.

Doulas!!

Doulas are women who support other women in labour, birth and postpartum. Some women really benefit from an extra person at the birth - whether it is for hands on support, providing support to partners or whatever you think you might need!
We are happy to work with doulas, and have done so on many occasions, both in home and hospital births.

If you are interested in having a doula at your birth, we are lucky enough to have 3 doulas that live in South Delta, and who are also happy to cover births in Richmond and beyond. Please see the links on the links page for Wendy, Dayna and Kim.

Wendy and Dayna both became doulas after having their babies with South Delta Midwifery, and they also run our film nights. Dayna teaches birthing from within classes and does birth photography. Wendy runs the pregnancy loss group and book club. Kim also practices Reiki and is a breastfeeding counsellor.

We are lucky to have them in our community!

Tiffany and Ray’s story

This is Tiffany’s birth story. Their lovely daughter, Dylan, is in the belly cast picture on this site.

Our perfect little angel was born at 7:56pm on Tuesday, November 13th, 2007, 6 days past her due date. Just after 3am on Monday the 12th I awoke suddenly, feeling a slight gush. I was either too tired to respond or I was in denial because I convinced myself that I must have imagined it and went back to sleep. The next thing I knew, it happened again. I got out of bed and when I stood up water started running down my leg. I stood there in a bit of a panic for a few seconds wondering if I could possibly have just wet myself, and then I woke up my husband. “Ray, I think my water just broke.”

Christies birth story

Well its been far too long since I wrote here! Busy with lots of lovely births and with having Sara get well on her way to completing her orientation.
We have had the privilege of welcoming babies at home and hospital, both in Richmond and BC Women’s. The film nights are great - wonderful discussions afterwards. The next night is on July 21st, at 6.30pm. There is a vote to choose the film on the facebook site This is open to all, although space is limited so book your place early!
I have pasted Christies story here. Although planning a regular hospital birth when she booked in for care, during the course of her pregnancy she gradually changed her mind to a home birth.

Christies birth - welcoming Noel
We love telling the story of our son’s birth. It’s the birth story we’d imagined, everything we’d hoped for – in so many ways due the opportunity to have a homebirth.
